Follow up for lesson on Question Analysis

Please post your learning points for today's lesson as comments to this thread. Each group is to post at least one learning point and you should not post a point already posted by another group. This learning point could be something we covered during the lesson, or something which came to you as a result of going through the preparation I set last week, or even something which came after the lesson. Do spend some time thinking about it as this is a critical skill.

Please complete this by 3 Feb Wednesday.

Here are some questions which may help you in posting your learning points:
1) What have you noticed about using the different methods of generating ideas?
2) What have you learnt about translating the ideas that you have generated into points?
3) What are some things to look out for when analysing the question?
4) Why are some words in the question more important than others? Are there unimportant words which we can ignore?
5) Can there be more than one possible stand to a question?

You may also comment on other areas not covered by my question.

  1. Ideas should be broad and overlap as little as possible. Every question has word(s) that are more important than others, as it will define the scope/topic of the essay. This word will be useful for some of the idea generation methods such as word association and mind mapping.

  3. The point of an argument should be not as specific as a single example, yet at the same time not as broad as the topic sentence. It should be used to explain the stand of the topic sentence and can be supported by a few examples at the same time.

    Tip: Use sandglass

    Broad: Point
    Narrow: Example
    Broad: Link

  4. There can be two stands to a question, agree or disagree. The question will have various advantages and disadvantages for the general public, and you can use Mindmap Categorization or other methods to weigh them and decide which side you are on. Also, different perspectives cause different people to have different stands. Etc Government may not be supportive of free media due to completely no control of information citizens receive, whereas citizens may be supportive as they want to know about all news, regardless of how it affects the country (North Korea)

  5. we used the context method
so i think its good in analysing the question in terms of its content and come out with points for my essay
Also the points can be linked in terms of time which is either short term or long term and also past or in the future
and the same time the location which can be the difference in countries , etc
